M211 AFRICA OLD AND NEW MIEM TAYLOR
Some aspects of South African history. The settlement at the Cape. The forgotten people – the Khorasan & Kho-khoi. The bizarre battle for Lake Tanganyika during World War 1.

Miem was born in South Africa. Has lived in Australia for the past 50 years. Retired school teacher.

M212 CROSSWORDS OF THE CRYPTIC KIND FRANK BROWN
Fun. (Well, I was asked for short description!)

Frank (never a cross word) Brown has been an addict for last 56.84 years.

M213 WOMEN WHO DID DAVID LEAMAN
We often hear about the woman behind the man. What about those in front? We almost never hear about them. This course looks at some women who, in various fields, made great contributions in their own right, Many are miles from household names. Come along and find out who they are and how they got overlooked.

M214 FIRST WOMEN JANE HALL
An account of the first women to achieve in predominantly male domains. Chosen fields are Aviation, Medicine, Architecture, Olympic Games and finally some Australian Pioneering women – including "firsts".

Islam: the faith, the culture and the arts

M216 PAINTING – TWO SESSIONS JAN FAGAN
(Coordinator)
This is a self directed course. Various media may be used - watercolours, acrylic paint, pencil, pen & ink, pastels. Class members take turns in presenting a subject and the preferred medium. Session 1 is a continuation. New members will be welcome in session 2 where current members will be on hand to offer assistance.

Those who like books and are interested in sharing those they enjoy or even talking about those they have disliked will be most welcome to join this group. The sessions will be run by members participating and sharing rather than tutor directed.

M221 WRITERS WORKSHOP COLIN PYEFINCH
An opportunity for those who enjoy writing (or would like to) to share their efforts in a friendly atmosphere of mutual support and encouragement.
Class limit 15.

M222 A VIRTUAL TOUR OF THE MIDLANDS HIGHWAY WAYNE SMITH
This will feature Power-point presentations showing images of bridges and buildings of historical interest The talks will be liberally spiced with local stories about bushranger raids, town gossip, murders, atrocities, scandals etc. with pen sketches of the town founders and principal landowners. Also diary records of early explorers and governors' visits will be included to reveal how the town concerned has grown and developed.
  • Wayne is an author, historical researcher and public speaker.
  • He is best known for his popular Saturday morning talk-back program with Chris Wisby on ABC Radio on Tasmanian Place Names.
  • He was president of the Bellerive Historical Society for 5 years and has been vice president of several other local historical societies.
  • He has written several books on Tasmanian history and nomenclature.
  • Wayne has been researching Tasmanian history for 30 years and has a great collection of Tamaniana.

Test your world-of-knowledge skills in a friendly and competitive quiz. Teams are encouraged. Attendees to bring a pen or pencil.

Patricia and Tony are a couple of trivia enthusiasts.

Learn to dance and have fun. It's good for the mind and body and you won't fall asleep in my class.

M231 THE FIRST MIGRANTS HELEN LAWRENCE
60,000 years ago the first migrants came to Australia. They came to a land empty of humans where there was no one to cage them up and send them away. They proceeded to colonize the entire country including Tasmania.

M233 UPDATES & ODDITIES – NEWS & SCIENCE
FROM THE WORLD OF ASTRONOMY
PETER TAYLOR

We will examine the latest news from the world of astronomy and developments in the technology involved. New breakthroughs and discoveries will be discussed and images shown ranging from new planets, stars and space missions etc.

Peter, a keen amateur in the world of space flight and astronomy, had worked at the Canberra NASA Deep Space Tracking Station as an explainer.

M234 BEGINNING PAINTING ALLISON BENDER
A basic training course including colour design, mediums and applications. Students will need to provide their own materials which will be discussed at the first class.
Class limit 10.

M235 TAI CHI MARY NEWMAN
Tai Chi is an effective art form that has been proven to relax and strengthen both the body and the mind, and is considered suitable for anyone of any age.

M236 ESPERANTO ROBERT BUDZUL
Esperanto is an easy language to learn. It has only 16 rules of grammar - none of which have exceptions. Esperanto has also proven to be a good foundation for learning languages in general.

Enjoy losing yourself in reading the part of a different character. No experience necessary – just a voice!
Class limit 8.

W235 CIRCLE DANCING KRISTA SANDS
The dances will be drawn from traditional dances, mostly from Europe, with a goodly number of modern choreographies thrown in. The dances will be slow to moderate in tempo, depending on the participants.

Addicted to dancing, and did a dance teacher training course after retiring from work. Get a buzz when people 'get it' and start enjoying the process.

W236 CHESS SELF-DIRECTED
The aim of the course is to assist new and those familiar with the game to better understand the beauty of the game and to encourage improvement to all with the main aim of enjoyment coupled with social interaction.
