M111 BOOK CLUB PATRICIA CORBY & JOAN CARR
Those who like books and are interested in sharing those they enjoy or even talking about those they have disliked will be most welcome to join this group. The sessions will be run by members participating and sharing rather than tutor directed.

Patricia is an ex-school teacher who taught secondary students F2F and both secondary & primary online. She loves reading and discussing books.

Joan is an ex-teacher also who loves books and talking about books.

M112 ABOUT LIFE DAVID LEAMAN
My version of the history of life on Earth. Better than Fortey's, more accurate than Attenborough (if not as well illustrated). Not to be missed. Biological and philosophical issues discussed.

M113 CURRENT TRENDS IN EDUCATION: LOCAL, NATIONAL & GLOBAL GORDON GOWARD
(Coordinator)
Learn more about current trends in education from leading staff from the University of Tasmania. Topics will range across a broad spectrum of issues currently affecting both the secondary and higher education sectors. Lectures will include discussions around the growing prevalence of open education resources, trends in global student mobility, innovations in science and maths education, the role of Universities in regional development and strategies to widen higher education participation in Tasmania.

M114 PAINTING – TWO SESSIONS JANETTE FAGAN
(Facilitator)
This is a self directed course. Various media may be used - watercolours, acrylic paint, pencil, pen & ink, pastels. Class members take turns in presenting a subject and the preferred medium. Session 1 is a continuation. New members will be welcome in session 2 where current members will be on hand to offer assistance.

An opportunity for those who enjoy writing (or would like to) to share their efforts in a friendly atmosphere of mutual support and encouragement.

M122 HISTORY OF PALESTINE JOHN HOOPER
A look at the claims on Palestine from 3000BC. Particularly at the Jewish claims.

M123 DARWIN'S ANTIPODEAN CREW HELEN LAWRENCE
Four 'naturalists' sailed round the world to Australia and/or Indonesia in the 1800s; Darwin, Hooker, Huxley and Wallace. We follow their journeys and their science. Peter Stevenson will be taking 2 sessions on details of the ships they sailed on.

Learn to dance and have fun. It's good for the mind and body and you won't fall asleep in my class.

Jill has been doing line dancing for over 20 years and has been teaching it for 14 years.

M133 AS TIME GOES BY JANE HALL
A broad look at how the human body works, the systems and major organs, how aging affects this function and can we slow these effects down?
I hope to keep this light hearted as well as informative. No "body" needs to get really serious about this topic!

M134 BEGINNING PAINTING ALLISON BENDER
A basic training course including colour design, mediums and applications. Students will need to provide their own materials which will be discussed at the first class.

M135 TAI CHI MARY NEWMAN
Tai Chi is an effective art form that has been proven to relax and strengthen both the body and the mind, and is considered suitable for anyone of any age.

M136 ESPERANTO ROBERT BUDZUL
Esperanto is an easy language to learn. It has only 16 rules of grammar - none of which have exceptions. Esperanto has also proven to be a good foundation for learning languages in general.

W112 CHURCHILL FELLOWS PATRICIA CORBY
The course will focus on Churchill Fellows, both male and female, from Tasmania and a couple maybe from Interstate. The reasons behind their fellowships, how these impacted on each fellow and their community and what has developed subsequently will be presented.

Patricia is herself a Churchill Fellow as well as being the Secretary of the Tasmanian Churchill Fellows' Association. She has connections with Fellows Australia-wide.

W113 LANGUAGES PETER STEVENSON
A study of Language, based on "Human Language" – a great course disc by John McWhorter. Half an hour of John, followed by notes by me and discussion. Whole disc will be available for borrowing ( 36 1/2 hours) at the end of the term.

W114 SKETCHING/DRAWING SELF DIRECTED
Come and join a group of enthusiastic people to follow a passion of sketching and drawing. New members to the group are welcome.

W115 MORE COMPOSERS, POETS & PERFORMERS SHEILA SPARGO
This course will present a selection of the work of (mainly) Australian poets, composers, singers and ballet dancers, in a combination of music, slides and video, including some beautiful Tasmanian landscape photography by the late Trevor Spargo.

Sheila is a trained soprano whose hobbies are video-making, photography and trying to write poetry.

W123 BIRDS WITHOUT WINGS EILEEN LEVETT
The development of modern-day Turkey: Share the insight into a lost society - the collapsing Ottoman Empire - where the older traditions of mutual respect and tolerance were replaced by the pressures of modern nationalism and war; the after-effects of which are felt to this day. Experience the bitter struggles between Greeks and Turks through literature, memoirs, interviews and historical research.


W127 MARITIME MUSEUM REX COX
An overview of the development of Hobart's port over two centuries, and its close association with the city. We will look particularly at the trades and industries that it has served and the great variety of ships that have called.

Rex say, "I have been interested in ships and the Port of Hobart from an early age, when I used to accompany my father to the waterfront at weekends to look at the "apple boats". I started photographing ships in the port in 1960 and still try to obtain a photograph of every vessel that calls. I joined the Maritime Museum in 1985, and now enjoy being a Life Member as well as an active volunteer, particularly with visiting schools and tour groups. My career was with Customs for nearly 35 years and I'm presently involved in completing the manuscript of a book on famous and interesting ships that have visited Hobart over two centuries."

W126 HISTORY & EXPLORATION OF MARS ALBERT GOEDE
Exploration history and physical nature of Mars. We examine the famous canals, prospects of life, evidence for glaciers and running water and the prospects of colonizing the planet.

Albert ia a retired lecturer from the School of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Tasmania. Hobbies are bush walking, digital photography, especially of wildflowers and aboriginal art as well as gardening.
Class limit 40.

Presentation of recordings of classical music, early to contemporary. Non-technical discussion and class participation.

W134 PLAY READING TONY MANLEY
Enjoy losing yourself in reading the part of a different character. No experience necessary – just a voice!
Class limit 8.

W135 CIRCLE DANCING ANGELA TAMAYO & MICHIKO GOUGH
Angela will take the first 5 weeks with a focus on Balkan dance. These dances are easy and enjoyable. Exotic rhythms that get you moving. Michiko will take the last 5 weeks with a focus on simple Israeli dancing. These are simple but enjoyable dances in a circle or in a couple. No partner needed. Let's enjoy beautiful music and a variety of steps.

Angela has been dancing for about 30 years. She has attended seminars in Bulgaria and Macedonia and has taught Adult education classes.

Michiko was born in Tokoyo, Japan. Went to Israel for teachers course. Has been dancing for over 35 years and teaching dance for 8 years in Western Australia.

W125 CHESS MERV KERSHAW
The aim of the course is to assist new and those familiar with the game to better understand the beauty of the game and to encourage improvement to all with the main aim of enjoyment coupled with social interaction.

Merv has played chess at various levels for a number of years (more than he likes to count). He started playing at high school, later with the Hobart chess club and correspondence chess with the Correspondence Chess League of Australia and has played in many chess tournaments and championships.
