Learn from an experienced family historian. To get the most from this course, it is preferable for attendees to have some computer and internet search skills.

Who would you like to have for dinner guests, and why? Margaret Rose, Ian Duffy, Pat Jeffery, John Hooper, Rowena MacKean, Peter Read, Joan Carr, Lynn and Frank Brown will expound on their choices.

Ten different presenters will talk about their favourite characters - it might be anyone – it might even be themselves!

This is a self led group with a different member introducing a new topic each week. New members are welcome in the second session which begins at 10.50 am, and there will be a member there to assist them. We do venture into other mediums occasionally, such as pastels, scraperboard, coloured pencil, and pencil sketching.

Focus on supported conversation - grammar tuition as required. Small, friendly group, high participation for each student.  Content of course largely decided by class members, but please note, it is not a 'French for Tourists'  class.  Continuing members have preference but when vacancies occur new members are made very welcome.

M216 POETS, COMPOSERS AND ENTERTAINERS SHEILA SPARGO
This course gives examples in words, music and pictures, of how different branches of the Arts gain inspiration from one another, largely the setting of poetry to music but also including sessions on humour and ballet.

M231 FRENCH FOR TRAVELLERS ROBERT HUGHES
This is not a continuation course similar to other classes we've taught at U3A Clarence in the past. It is designed for those who have done little or no French or who studied French a long time ago. It is not a grammar course, but is designed to enable students to cope in basic conversational situations they may well encounter in French-speaking countries, such as catching a bus, shopping, eating in a restaurant.

M233 FROM MONET TO VAN GOGH: A HISTORY OF IMPRESSIONISM CECILIA WOOTTON
This follows on from the lectures on the Louvre held last year. Again Professor Brettell enlightens us on the Impressionists, analysing an era within the history of art that launched the birth of modernity and changed the way we see the world. We begin by looking at the troubled state of art in France in the 1850’s and the development of impressionism following the rebuilding of Paris by Napoleon III.

M236 MANDARIN TONY DOMIGAN
A beginners introduction to Mandarin conversation. Simple conversation skills will be taught using the Pinyin tone system reinforced with some limited reading and writing skills. The course is suitable for people with little or no Mandarin experience.

W212 DISCOVERING MUSIC THROUGH THE LANGUAGE OF NOTATION (1st 5 weeks) NINA THOMAS
This course traces the history of music notation from the earliest times through to computers, encompassing Western and non-Western music. It looks at the role of the conductor and how music scores are organized. No previous music knowledge is necessary.

Mah Jong is a Chinese game of Winds and Dragons, played with tiles and is a good mental challenge. We will play the Australian version of the game.

The survey will emphasise Maori Treaty rights, the growth of democracy, legislative innovation, economic challenges, women’s progress, and comparisons with Australia, from 9th century AD Maori colonisation to the present day.
