M136 MANDARIN ROBERT BUDZUL
One can easily read-up on the internet if one simply wants an overview of the language - for this reason, I'll attempt to opt for a course in which the participants actually do actively learn to speak some Mandarin. I will explain how the writing works and the tones of course... but I will attempt to use lots of oral practice in class. In order to make progress participants will most likely need to do some work at home via the net. Though it could be done just with a pen and paper as it will mostly be just drills to remember vocab. Being a language course though, unlike a lecture series, content will need to be remembered/memorised from week to week.)

Robert says: Three years of Mandarin at UTAS, I also speak Cantonese quite fluently. I speak another 5 or so languages reasonably well so I have some experience in how to go about learning languages.
