M211 WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? BARRY CHAPMAN
How to use local records at the state Library and online databases to identify and record your ancestors, their lives and times. To get the most from this course, it is preferable for attendees to have some computer and internet search skills.

M212a MARINE SCIENCE Wks 1-4 JOHN COLL
The 4 lectures will cover the Origins of oceanic Reefs and the organisms that create them; stories about Toxic marine animals and plants, and Drugs from the sea.

M212b DEATHS IN NEED OF EXPLANATION Wks 5-10 DAVID LEAMAN
A consideration of the death of some historically significant individuals (as seen in retrospective) and the politics and suspects of the time. Consequences have often been important.

M213 SPACE MISSIONS - PAST & PRESENT PETER TAYLOR
We'll be digging into archived material to re-examine some of the earlier missions such as Galileo, Stardust, Deep Impact. Also keeping up to date with the latest information and images from space and science.

M214 PAINTING CONTINUATION SELF DIRECTED - PAT OLDING (Facilitator)
This is a continuation class. Participants will be encouraged to lead the class in various methods of painting and drawing. The class will be able to experiment in watercolour painting and enjoy working in a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. As this is a continuation class, no new members will be admitted at this stage. Names will go on a list and if a vacancy occurs, they may be asked to join.

An informal course to share your favourite anthologies and read much-loved poetry.

M216 FRENCH CONTINUATION HILARY FAWCETT
PLEASE NOTE! THIS IS A CONTINUATION COURSE, WITH VACANCIES FROM TIME TO TIME FOR NEW MEMBERS. At present we expect there to be two vacancies. The group is capped at 8 members to allow for plenty of student participation. Most sessions are dominated by assisted discussions and conversations in French on a variety of themes and topics, as requested by the class, with grammatical tuition as the need arises. More fluent speakers needing a higher standard should consider the courses at Hobart U3A. It is a very friendly, mutually supportive group, with a great sense of humour.

We call this reel exercise and it is recommended for physical and mental health. We enjoy sharing dances from various traditions and sometimes the stories or music behind them.

M225 ITALIAN ROSANNE JOYCE
A continuing course, not for beginners. Conversation, a little grammar and reading short novels.

W211 CRYPTIC CROSSWORDS FRANK BROWN
Considered by some to be a total waste of time, they are actually one of the best time wasters on the planet, ideal for airport lounges, long bus trips and as an ideal accompaniment to a cuppa. These puzzles are one of the best mental workouts you can give your brain. Requirements for course are pencil, eraser and twisted sense of humour.

W212 PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE DIGITAL AGE GRAEME WOOTTON
This course will cover most aspects of digital still photography from choosing the best camera for your purposes; understanding its basic operation; general camera technique; compositional considerations; computer image adjustment; emailing photos; through to printing your images at home or displaying them on an HD television or projector.

Dear U3A Members,
As a first time coordinator for this course, I have been very impressed by the topics chosen by the presenters, and by their willingness to participate in the course. The travel stories cover a time span of approximately forty two years from the first presenter, to the last presenter. I am looking forward to the presentations and hope that the course is both informative and engaging.

Mah Jong is a Chinese gambling game played with 144 tiles in 3 suits plus winds and dragons. It has been altered to make a `Western' game. It keeps the mind active because you may have to change said mind several times during a game.

Eight tutors describing the lead up to the present in their area of interest and their personal predictions for the next few years till 2020. Peter Stevenson, Rowena MacKean, Ian Duffy, Joan Carr, David Leaman, Mickey Benefiel, Peter Read and Shannon Rose will put their reputations on the line. Bring along your own thoughts and see how different yours are from theirs.

We see Tasmanian politics unroll respectively through the jaundiced eyes of a hell-fire and brimstone temperance preacher, an inventor frustrated by bureaucracy, a true-blue upright patriot, a disappointed musician and schoolteacher, and a carping academic returning after a long absence to present day Tasmania. For a moment there he thought he was returning to his great-great-grandfather's Van Diemen's Land.

WEDNESDAY SESSION 3 - 12.05

W231 FACING THE MUSIC CHRIS CARSON
Presentation of recordings of classical music early to contemporary. Non-technical discussion and class participation.

Christian was born in Aldeburgh England. He has been a radio broadcaster for 14 years on 96.1 FM 'Classical Sounds'. He is a bass baritone and has sung solo roles in opera, oratorio and on ABC radio.

This is a continuing course so new students should have a basic knowledge of the language.

W234 BACKGAMMON GRAEME LINDRIDGE
Backgammon is an ancient game yet still played world-wide. It is easy to play, and is a quick game (15-20 mins). Though it is skillful, all levels of skill can enjoy it. The rolls of the dice add a bit of luck to the play (not too much, not too little, just the right amount!) such that a strong player does not always beat a lesser player. Boards provided, or bring your own.

W235 LINE DANCING JILL CANTON
Dance movements for the hips, ankles and the mind. The dances are easy and not fast, it is geared for seniors.

W236 PLAY READING SONDRA TAYLOR & TONY MANLEY
This course is for people who enjoy being part of a cast at the reading stage only. We read serious drama. English farce and Australian plays. No experience necessary.
