An informal course to share your favourite anthologies and read much-loved poetry.

M113 DEATHS IN NEED OF EXPLANATION DAVID LEAMAN
A consideration of the death of some historically significant individuals (as seen in retrospective) and the politics and suspects of the time. Consequences have often been important.

M115 PAINTING SUE BANKS
This is a continuation class. Participants will be encouraged to lead the class in various methods of painting and drawing. The class will be able to experiment in watercolour painting and enjoy working in a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. As this is a continuation class, no new members will be admitted at this stage. Names will go on a list and if a vacancy occurs, they may be asked to join.
The tutor will be available for the first hour only.
Class maximum 12.

M116 WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? BARRY CHAPMAN
interactive weekly seminars for beginning and more experienced family historians. The seminars will cover generic genealogical research methods and key information sources for those interested in forbears who lived in England and Wales, with some sources for those who wish to research Irish or Scottish ancestors. If required, knowledge of researching colonial American and post 1784 United States records, as well as colonial West Indies sources, can be shared and discussed.

A gathering of book lovers. If who have a special book/s that you would never part with, share your thoughts about it with the rest of the class.

This is a ongoing class but room for others. All members need to be fluent enough to understand the flow and to ask pertinent questions.

Beginnings of policing and looking at some of the world's forces.

M124 WRITERS WORKSHOP COLIN PYEFINCH
An opportunity for those who enjoy writing (or would like to) to share their efforts in a friendly atmosphere of mutual support and encouragement.

This is a continuation of M115 class.

M126 COUNTRY DANCING ALISON JONES
We call this reel exercise and it is recommended for physical and mental health. We enjoy sharing dances from various traditions and sometimes the stories behind them or the music.

M127 ITALIAN ROSANNE JOYCE
Intermediate level, not for beginners. The course consists of brief revision of important grammar, conversation & a new reading: Non ho paura + a dvd of the film.

MONDAY SESSION 3 - 12.05

M131 THE WOMAN IN WHITE PENNY COHEN
Wilkie Collins was regarded as "the father of the detective novel" and wrote many books filled with mystery and sensation. "The Woman in White" was the first such book and he always regarded it as his best. Collins, a friend of Charles Dickens, led an intriguing life and we will look at this as well. I will be doing this as a book discussion but will also provide a power point presentation on Collins's life and perhaps show a little of the dvd of the book. The book is in print and is available in Penguin for $9.95.

M132 FILMS CATHERINE FAIR
There will be films of no more than 60 mins to fit into 1 session, made up of episodes of short films and TV programs. A suggestion of programs will shortly be added to this website.

M134 OUR UNIVERSE - EXPLORING IT USING BASIC ASTRONOMY PETER TAYLOR
Basics of astronomy, radio and optical, aimed to interest amateurs- given by an amateur! This course will chart advances and discoveries that combined to increase our knowledge of the universe, along with images of the universe. We will keep track of discoveries and contemporary space news.

M136 TAI CHI MARY NEWMAN
Tai Chi is an effective art form that has been proven to strengthen both body and mind and is considered suitable for anyone of any age.

M137 EAST MEETS WEST EILEEN LEVETT
This course will aim to demonstrate how a mixture of both eastern and western 'modalities' can be tailored to suit individual needs and limitations. Some theory will be used to better understand the benefits of each modality & technique. Exercise, stretching, meditation and (self) massage combine to give a relaxing but energising hour.
Participants will need:- to wear loose clothing; bring a water bottle and mat or rug.

    1. information about various eastern modalities, both theoretical & practical
    2. an opportunity to practice and combine various techniques
    3. the means to develop a program of exercise and relaxation techniques, tailored to their individual needs and limitations

We will be discussing a selection.

W112 PARTICLES QUANTA AND STARDUST IAN DUFFY
Physics of the miniscule, the massive and the mighty fast. Some physics, but mostly the history, context, people, rationale, consequences and applications of these exciting and world-changing discoveries. The presentation will be supported with images, animations, video and sound. Whilst this course is a continuation of 'The Crooked Road', it stands on its own. No prerequisite knowledge!

W115 MAH-JONG DON CLAYTON
Mah-jong is an ancient Chinese game of winds and dragons with additional tiles named bamboo circle and characters. We will be learning the western style of Mah-jong with hands like ruby jade, apple blossom and yin yang. For beginners but experienced players are welcomed. If you have a Mah Jong set please bring it along.

W122 PEOPLING THE EARTH REX KERRISON
"Peopling the Earth" traces the fossil evidence re the rise of human kind. It examines the geological and climatic factors that governed the spread of very early people to the continents, with the Americas being the last to be reached. Concluding sessions focus on the very different environmental conditions which the first Tasmanians encountered approx 40,000 years ago. Also, the archaeological evidence regarding early Tasmanian life will be presented.

Attempt to come to terms with the current constant upheaval in the Middle East, I have found it necessary to research the forces that shaped the history of the Middle East going as far back to the two great empires of Rome and Persia; the development of monotheism through Christianity and Islam; the rise and fall of the great Ottoman Empire and more currently the pervasive impact of western ideas and technology and the responses and reactions they evoked. This is a continuing course so new students should have a basic knowledge of the language.

W134 GEMOLOGY JEWEL BERESFORD
The first week will be a general introduction to gemstones with the following week focusing on stones of particular interest to the class members.

W135 CIRCLE DANCING KRISTA SANDS
This term we will be doing mainly Israeli dances. Steps are easy, tempo moderate, having two left feet is not problem, and no experience is necessary. Warning! You might get addicted.


W136 PLAY READING SONDRA TAYLOR & TONY MANLEY
This course is for people who enjoy being part of a cast at the reading stage only. We read serious drama. English farce and Australian plays. No experience necessary.
