MONDAY SESSION 1 - 9.30

M311 WATERCOLOUR PAINTING SUE BANKS
A Continuation course. Participants will be encouraged to try a range of ideas using the versatile medium of Watercolours, drawing and pastels. The class will work in a relaxed comfortable atmosphere.

M312 ANTHROPOLOGIST ADVENTURERS HELEN LAWRENCE
Large as life characters! We examine the Leakey dynasty, Don Johanson's 'Lucy', Hobbits and the fight between Morwood and Jacob and the heavies pontificating about Neanderthals.

M313 FAUSTIAN BARGAINS? DAVID LEAMAN
The course begins with the Faust legend and then considers nine applications where society and industry may have made a similar bargain, with a comparable result, and asks were the benefits worthwhile. You decide. A couple of the topics are current and most deal with activities within our memory.

M314 HIGHER INTERMEDIATE FRENCH HILARY FAWCETT
A working knowledge of the present, past and future tense is necessary, as is a fair knowledge of basic grammar. There is also a strong emphasis on the spoken word.

M315 GUILT, SHAME & ATONEMENT HUGO MCCANN
The recent novel by Bernard link, the German jurist 'The Reader' and the film of the novel released in 2009 deals with personal and society guilt. It is a complicated story of guilt set in post war Germany but told in a very direct and clear manner. The novel which is quite short has sold over a million copies. This program will review (and read) the novel and examine how the film deals with the story. Recommended buying Slink: The Reader.

M321 COUNTRY DANCING ALISON JONES
Our dances come from many places, many times traditional and modern) and in many shapes. We enjoy moving with music and making friends.

M322 A BEAUTIFUL SET OF NUMBERS VIN COCKBURN
Size, shape, sound and beauty etc matter (cf Galileo; "nature's great book is written in mathematical symbols). We will investigate this claim from historical, aesthetic, anatomical, musical and sociological points of view. The maths required will be fairly simple and user-friendly.

M333 GEORGE ELIOT — HER LIFE AND WORKS LOAN CARR
George Eliot's life as well as her novels was controversial and unconventional. We will study both. Suggested reading: A good idea but certainly not essential - any books by George Eliot.

M334 LOWER INTERMEDIATE FRENCH HILARY FAWCETT
A small, supportive group for those who have done some French in the past and who need to be reminded again of basic rules and skills.

Thinking outside the box - then putting the answer into the box. Excellent preventative therapy for Old Timers Disease. Puzzles ranging from dead easy to supremely difficult will be provided.

Ice Ages have shaped the Earth. What causes Ice Ages? We are living in the Quaternary Ice Age which has shaped our evolution. Will the Ice Age continue? How will it affect our future?

M311 PENCIL DRAWING SUE BANKS
This class is a continuation of drawing classes held earlier this year - a chance to extend your skills. Drawing is a wonderful way to switch to the right side of your brain and begin to concentrate on a hidden skill. All are welcome - this is a subject that everyone can do! A time to relax and enjoy this voyage of discovery into the wonderful world of drawing!

W312 FROM CARBON TO DNA IN 10 EASY STEPS JOHN COLL
Provides an introduction to the chemistry of carbon leading to the building blocks for the proteins and DNA. Discussion of structure and replication of DNA.

From Apollo to the new Kepler Space Telescope. We view historic images through to new images and data from the latest missions and, hopefully, images from Hubble's new camera.

His best-known novel, a satire on English society in the Regency era. Love, war, comedy, pathos, and a gallery of characters including the adventuress Becky Sharp. Read, discuss and compare.
You will need your own copy. The Penguin edition is useful, but any edition will do.

WEDNESDAY SESSION 3 - 12.05

W331 THE HISTORY OF CLASSICAL MUSIC NINA THOMAS
This course is designed for both non musicians and musicians. Music will be played and explanations will be given for non- musicians. For musicians, there is an opportunity of reading the scores for many of the works as they are played. It briefly looks at the historical medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, classical, romantic and 20th-century periods. It includes a music, the composers, the main genres such as Gregorian chant, madrigals, Mass, fugues, Concerto, Symphony, chamber music, opera, sonata, lied, piano music, program music, nationalism. The genres are linked to the art works, architecture and events and people of the times.

Presentations by members researching their interests using State Library resources. Join in and add to their information on places, people and events including Wynyard, Queenstown, The Theatre Royal, Darwin and the Voyage of the Beagle, Lady Hamilton, Molesworth Jeffrey, convicts, ancestors & much more.

W333 ESPERANTO ROBERT BUDZUL
Esperanto is an easy language to learn. It has only 16 rules of grammar - none of which have exceptions. Esperanto has also proven to be a good foundation for learning languages in general.
