MONDAY SESSION 1 - 9.30

M211 WATERCOLOUR PAINTING JANNETTE FAGAN
This course will be a continuation of Term 1. Suzanne Banks will be away and Jan Fagan is kindly filling in for her.
Jan has attended mixed media classes with artist Jenny Young. She is not an expert watercolourist but is very enthusiastic!

M212 WHAT DARWIN THOUGHT DAVID LEAMAN
Year 2009 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin. This head-and-shoulders man changed human thinking and deserves to be buried in Westminster Abbey. This course considers what he thought and why. Hear his arguments, and doubts, about species in his own words. Expect to find that others have placed spin on these very words for their own ends.

M213 HIGHER INTERMEDIATE FRENCH HILARY FAWCETT
A working knowledge of the present, past and future tense is necessary, as is a fair knowledge of basic grammar. Grammar is taught and revised but there is also a strong emphasis on the spoken word. Continuing class.
Hilary has degrees in Medieval English Language and Literature and in French. She has taught English and French and has worked in orchestral administration.

Des is an old Hobartian with experience in acting and some directing (AMEB Speech and Drama Grade VII).

M215 ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN BEVERLEY THOMSON
Hone your creative skills as you learn design techniques. This course includes line, direction, shape, size, colour, tone and much more. Please bring scissors, glue-stick and a magazine to cut up.
Beverley is a professional colour consultant who studied at the School of Colour and Design in Sydney.

M221 COUNTRY DANCING BERNARD GILLON and MARY COWLING
Our Country Dancing teacher, Alison Jones, will be away but Bernard and Mary will kindly carry on this popular class, teaching us Square Dancing and Bush Dancing respectively. Mary will be teaching Bush Dancing, aimed at continuing the enthusiasm for dancing generated by Alison and at keeping our fitness where possible.
Mary was a teacher for over 30 years with experience from Kinder to Grade 10 over a wide variety of subjects.

M223 ITALIAN ROSANNE JOYCE
This is a continuing course therefore beginners would find it too difficult. We will continue with everyday conversational topics with necessary grammar.
Rosie topped the matriculation exam in Italian in 1989, lived in Modena for 5 years, visited frequently from Spain and once since returning to Australia. Future visits are intended.

A history of secret and other aircraft projects from 1949 to the present.

M225 AN OVERVIEW OF POPULAR GEMSTONES JEWEL BERESFORD
The romance, history and science of gems including Diamond, Emerald, Beryl, Ruby, Sapphire, Garnet, Tourmaline, Opal, Peridot, Topaz and Zircon.
Jewel has been a member of the Gemmological Association of Australia for 30 years. She is a life member of the Tasmanian Division and on the National body and a Director of that body.

M226 WRITERS WORKSHOP COLIN PYEFINCH
An opportunity for those who enjoy writing (or would like to) to share their efforts in a friendly atmosphere of mutual support and encouragement.
Class limit 12 but can cope with more since it’s rare for everyone to be there.

A range of reflections on the concept of Place – especially in relation to poetic, scientific, sociological, musical, historo-legal and visual aspects, offered by a variety of interesting presenters.
John and Frank are interested in the idea of Place as they have both lived and worked in many places.

M233 LOWER INTERMEDIATE FRENCH HILARY FAWCETT
A small, supportive group for those who have done some French in the past and who need to be reminded again of basic rules and skills. Competence with the present tense is necessary and a knowledge of the perfect tense (passé composé) and the imperfect. Much help with spoken French.

W211 THE FAITH, HISTORY AND ART PETER STEVENSON
Islam had an empire from 632AD until 1921 when it was colonised. Its arts of ceramics, architecture, metalwork and calligraphy are still with us. Suggested course reading: The History of God by Karen Armstrong.
Peter was a geologist in the UK, North, South and South-west Africa, Iraq, Iran, Persian Gulf. 22 years as Tasmanian Geological Surveyor and member of U3As Hobart and Clarence since formation..

W212 THE PLANETS PETER TAYLOR
In Term 1 we followed NASA’s first forays with the Mercury mission. We continue on with the Gemini and Apollo program – their development and mission objectives. We’ll see how small fleets of unmanned spacecraft were sent to test the lunar environment. We’ll also stay in touch with the current NASA/ESA missions.
Peter was an explainer for the NASA Deep Space Communications Centre. His interest in the space program is a life-long fascination, not only in the engineering and sciences but also how the function of these missions provides us with incredible images and data.

W213 SPANISH FRED SCHLUTER
This is a continuing course so new students should have a basic knowledge of the language.
Fred has travelled extensively in Spain, Mexico and South America and has had several years of experience as a translator and an interpreter in German and Spanish.

W214 POEM FOR THE DAY JENNIFER LINE
An informal course to share favourite anthologies and read much loved poetry.
Jenny was born in England, loved being read to as a child, worked as an occupational therapist and taught at Universities in USA, Canada and Queensland before coming to Tasmania in 1984.

We will read plays known and not so well known. The emphasis is on sharing and enjoyment. NO experience needed. If anyone enrols for this as well as another play reading group, we’ll have different plays.

W221 TAI CHI SUE DUFFY AND SONDRA TAYLOR
Our tutor Mary Newman will be away so Sue and Sondra will kindly carry on in her absence. Gentle Tai Chi movements promote co-ordination, balance, muscle tone and a time to connect with our inner selves in meditation.
Sondra was born in England and grew up in Devon. Since then she has lived in Africa and New Zealand. Until recently she was a VAO Ambulance Officer.

W222 EARLY HISTORY OF AUSTRALIA ROY GOLDFINCH
This course will be based on Book 1 of History of Australia by Professor Manning-Clark. Not necessary to read the book but keen readers may seek it out – published by Melbourne University Press.
Roy was educated in Canterbury and joined the British Merchant Navy at 16, travelled widely for 7 years then returned to study and qualified MB BS with 2 years hospital training. Married at 36 and honeymooned on the SS Fairsky coming to Australia. GP on East Coast for 8 years and in Oatlands for 3 years, did specialist training at Royal Hobart and established a practice on the North-west Coast. An avid reader, Roy returned to University after retiring and got a BA in Philosophy. Professor Manning-Clark’s book sparked Roy’s interest in Australian History.

This is a continuation of the Term 1 course with emphasis on Style, Art, Literature, Religion and Personalities.
Six different tutors – each week self-contained.

Participating students should have a good knowledge of the language.
Fred has had years of experience as an interpreter and translator.

WEDNESDAY SESSION 3 - 12.05

W231 CIRCLE DANCING KRISTA SANDS
We will learn dances from a range of cultures, mostly western, as well as modern choreographies. Steps will be easy and tempo slow to moderate. If you have two left feet don’t worry, the dances are adaptable.
Once upon a time Krista was a zoologist, next incarnation a computer programmer, but always a dancer at heart.

W232 ELIZABETH GASKELL AND CRANFORD JOAN CARR
Cranford was not Elizabeth Gaskell’s only book! We will look at her life, her writings (including her biography of Charlotte Bronte) and also the very popular Cranford with some excerpts from the BBC production. It would be a good idea (but not essential) to read anything of Elizabeth Gaskell’s that you can get hold of.

W233 ESPERANTO ROBERT BUDZUL
Esperanto is spoken in more than 100 countries which enables easy communication between people of different languages. There are only 16 rules of grammar - none of which have exceptions - which makes it an easy language to learn in a short time.

W234 FACING THE MUSIC CHRIS CARSON
Presentation of recordings of classical music early to contemporary. Non-technical discussion and class participation.
Chris was born in Aldeburgh England. He has been a radio broadcaster for 13 years on 96.1 FM 'Classical Sounds'. He is a bass baritone and has sung solo roles in opera, oratorio and on ABC radio for the past 35 years.

W235 REVISITING A HOORAY OF HENRYS RUTH BINNEY
A brief look at the English kings called Henry and their times.
Ruth is an ex-teacher of British, C20th, Australian and Ancient History. Currently keeping busy with research work for New Norfolk Historical Information Centre and running the RAST Fine Food Show.
