MONDAY SESSION 1 - 9.30

M211 INDIA, SRI LANKA AND THE HUMAN RACE HELEN LAWRENCE
What does the term 'race' really mean? How did divisions come about and what are they costing us? The course will include travel experiences from participants, i.e. 'Show and tell' sessions.

M212 CHALLENGING IDEAS DAVID LEAMAN
A review of some of those ideas which have challenged, or still challenge, cherished beliefs, the status-quo or popular belief. Each is fully explained with examples drawn from various fields. Three ideas are modern and especially controversial so be warned!

M213 HIGHER INTERMEDIATE FRENCH HILARY FAWCETT
A group capped at 8 members to maximise conversation opportunities. A working knowledge of the present, past and future tense is necessary, even if some of those are a bit rusty, as is a fair knowledge of basic grammar. Grammar is taught and/or revised, but there is also a strong emphasis on the spoken word.

M216 WATERCOLOUR PAINTING SUZANNE BANKS
Suzanne will coordinate this course and bring themes for each lesson.
Sue has painted for about twenty years, has painted overseas in Provence and Tuscany, is a member of the Art Society of Tasmania and the Southern Beaches Art Group. She has had a solo exhibition and has showed work at various exhibitions around Hobart and in Canberra.

We enjoy social dances, Scottish and others, make friends and have cheerful activity. This could be useful if we have a cold winter!

M222 THE MERCHANT OF VENICE FRAN BLADEL
One of Shakespeare's best loved plays. A story of commercial venture that promises disaster, anti-Semitism, revenge, runaway lovers and a strong woman who rights a wrong! What more could we need on a winter morning?
Where to buy. Imperial Book Shop (secondhand) near Fullers in Collins Street - or any good secondhand book store.

M223 THE ATMOSPHERE - WEATHER AND CLIMATE ALBERT GOEDE
The course explains the difference between weather and climate. Find out about cyclones, the El Nino Effect, the Ozone Layer, the Greenhouse Effect and Climate Change.

M224 ITALIAN ROSIE JOYCE
The course which is mainly conversational continues with topics covering travel, meals, weather, meeting people. As far as possible it relates to our own lives.
Rosie topped the matriculation exam in Italian in 1989, lived in Modena for 5 years, visited frequently from Spain and once since returning to Australia. Future visits are intended.

M225 ELECTRICITY & ELECTRONICS IN TODAY'S WORLD GREG THE
In this second tutorial series Greg will give you a guided tour through the world of electronics, from radio to CDs and DVDs, from the computer chips to high definition TV, from telephone to the mobile telephone and fibre optics. No mathematics will be used!
Up to his retirement in 1997 Greg was a member of the teaching and research staff of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Tasmania for 35 years.

M226 WRITERS WORKSHOP COLIN PYEFINCH
An opportunity for those who enjoy writing (or would like to) to share their efforts in a friendly atmosphere of mutual support and encouragement.

M231 TAI CHI MARY NEWMAN
Tai Chi is a universal medium for the cultivation of body, mind and spirit. It is for everyone, of all ages.

W232 FIGHTER & BOMBER AIRCRAFT OF THE NUCLEAR AGE LEN COTTER
The course will show how the role of Fighter and Airforce Bombers has drastically changed, also both that of the Pilots, Navigators and Protection of the Aircraft - eg Atom Bombers have no guns.

M233 BALLET AND THE ARTS PAT OLDING
We will look at the development of ballet and its influence on, and connections with, other art forms. There will be the opportunity to learn more about the influential dancers, composers, choreographers and artists and enjoy extracts of ballets.

M234 LOWER INTERMEDIATE FRENCH HILARY FAWCETT
A small supportive group for those who have done some French in the post and who need to be reminded again of basic rules and skills. Competence with the present tense in necessary and some knowledge of the perfect tense (passé) and imperfect. Much help with spoken French.

W211 SUSTAINABLE LIVING PETER BOYER & MARGARET STEADMAN
Peter Boyer will talk about Sustainable Living for the first four weeks and then Margaret Steadman will run several workshops on ways to live less wastefully.

W212 NELSON MANDELA: HIS LIFE AND ACHIEVEMENT ROBERT HUGHES
The course will consist of a study of Nelson Mandela's autobiography, 'Long Walk to Freedom' (Abacue, 1994). Copies may be found in the State Library and in bookshops. A DVD will also be shown.
Robert spent part of his younger life in South Africa and frequently revisits the country. He is particularly interested in the society, history and culture of South Africa.

Ten different speakers mainly from CSIRO but starting with two lectures on forensic dentistry by Dr Paul Taylor.

This is a continuing course so new students should have a basic knowledge of the language.
Fred has had many years of experience as an interpreter. Teaching helps him to maintain his own knowledge of languages.

A continuing look at High School maths, concentrating this term on Calculus.
Noela taught Maths and Science at Hobart High Schools for over 30 years. She is passionate about making Maths something that can be enjoyed rather than feared.

W222 CONSPIRACY THEORY! TREVOR WEBB
During the course we will examine a number of conspiracies which have occurred over the last five hundred years. These will range from the Sinking of the Titanic to Murdered Popes and will also examine the three Kennedy assassinations.

W223 WOMEN OF STRENGTH AND PURPOSE MARGARET ROSE
Women's contribution to the development of Australia is often underestimated, This course follows the stories of such women and the impact they had on Australian Society.

W224 ADVANCED GERMAN AND CONVERSATION FRED SCHLUTER
This is a continuing course. New students should be reasonably fluent in the language.

This course in French for absolute beginners will adopt a communication approach, although some grammar will be taught. Please bring a notebook and pen to each class.
Robert taught French for over thirty years, has studied in France and has visited several French-speaking countries.

This course discusses the lives of pirates, a heretic, an aristocrat, a spy, architects, explorers and more. Some of these people are of particular Tasmanian interest.

Continuing excursions into the convoluted consciousness of cryptic crosswords. Beginners welcome as well as the experts - we all help each other.
Keith is a retired pharmacist with a passion for words and figures and a warped sense of humour.

W235 FACING THE MUSIC CHRIS CARSON
An introduction to classical music with some knowledge and appreciation by listening to recordings and non-technical discussion. Covers major composers, history, trends - from medieval to 20th century.
Chris was a radio broadcaster for 12 years and has sung roles in opera, oratorio and on ABC radio.

This course traces the development of our mathematical system from earliest times to the present day. This term we will deal with the early civilisations of the Egyptians, Babylonians and the Greeks.
