M111 TASMANIAN WRITING AND WRITERS MARGARET ROSE AND ROWENA MACKEAN
After an overview of Tasmania's literary heritage, guest speakers will discuss their own work and the Tasmanian writing scene.

M112 COMMUNICATION THROUGH MUSIC PHILIPPA MOYES
A course with some repeat lectures and several new topics. Hear what a variety of speakers have to say about their specialty, ranging from the classroom to the concert hall.
Philippa has taught music in Australia and overseas and is a Marking Examiner for the Tasmanian Secondary Assessment Board. As a pianist she enjoys ensemble playing and accompanying.

M113 CHARACTERS OF LONDON PETER SOUTHGATE
The lives of some London characters from recent and past history. Drawn from the worlds of literature, the arts and crime. Sessions will include anecdote, readings, videos and slides.
Peter Southgate worked in London for 40 years in commerce, universities and the public service researching crime and policing for the government. He published and edited many reports and papers - and now enjoys teaching at U3As in Hobart and Clarence.

M114 THE BOER WAR (cont.) JOHN HOOPER & ARCHIE TAYLOR
Concentration camps - black involvement - Colonial and European involvement - food and medical services - conduct of the war and the bitter ending.
John Hooper has a background of army, police and local government. He is a history buff, particularly military history.

M115 HUCKLEBERRY FINN by MARK TWAIN GILLIAN SOUTHGATE
A study of the ground-breaking American novel of boyhood and slavery in the American South. You need to have a copy of the book - the Red Cross shop in Melville is a good place to try or any second-hand shop.
Gillian Southgate taught English and American literature at graduate level in England until 1998. Her passions are the early American writers and the moderns.

MONDAY SESSION 2 - 10.55

M121 COUNTRY DANCING ALISON JONES
Scottish country dancing is the social dancing of Scotland, more friendly and less taxing than Highland dancing. In this and other forms of country dancing we enjoy exercise - mental as well as physical - and make friends.
Alison has been dancing literally for as long as she can remember - she has collected teaching qualifications and taken part in displays and keeps in touch with teachers all over Australia.

M122 A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO PHOTOGRAPHY GRAHAM WOOTTON
A broad look at all the photographic options available today and how to make the right decisions and get the best out of your photography. Not a `how to use your camera' course but rather a general guide with particular emphasis on presentation of the final product - covers film and digital.
Graham has been involved with photography for over 30 years - from presenting audio-visuals at Hobart Town Hall in the 70s, writing articles for numerous magazines, as an Adult Ed tutor in the 90s and currently as a commercial photographer. Levy $3.

M123 INTERMEDIATE FRENCH WENDY CHAPMAN
This course is designed for those who have a basic understanding of French grammar and vocabulary. It will be conversational with readings and video viewings for discussion.
Wendy was a teacher of French, English and British History at The Friends' School. She has traveled extensively in France and is interested in all things French.

M124 NINE LIVES - INTERESTING WOMEN CORAL GOWARD
Nine women speaking about their lives, their achievements, their interests and themselves.
Coral has been a teacher and librarian, is still a yoga teacher and has arranged many courses for U3A Clarence.

M125 WRITERS WORKSHOP COLIN PYEFINCH
An opportunity for those who enjoy writing (or would like to) to share their efforts in a friendly atmosphere of mutual support and encouragement.

M126 THE VIKINGS JUDITH MUDALIAR
A brief look at the people and their culture, their expansion by sea and land into Europe and beyond and their legacy in those countries where they settled permanently.
Judith is an ex-teacher-librarian in various Tasmanian secondary schools. She has degrees in History and Literature and her interests include reading, genealogy, scrapbooking and embroidery.

Tai Chi is a universal medium for the cultivation of body, mind and spirit. It is for everyone, of all ages.

This is a continuing intermediate class. We will be using the Cambridge Latin Course Book 3.

M133 SCRABBLE CECILIA WOOTTON and BRENDA GARDNER
Scrabble can be played under water and under pressure; on a mountain top, on holiday and on your own; in haste and indoors; for hours and for sheep-stations; with patience and with friends; anyway you want. If you have a set dust it off, make sure there are still 100 tiles and bring it along. We will use only English and some sets and word-sheets will be provided. Class maximum 12.
Cecilia took up Scrabble in 1998 and is still hooked!
Brenda was an Early Childhood teacher in UK and Tasmania and has played Scrabble for 14 years.

M134 INTRODUCTION TO MALE A CAPELLA SINGING IN THE BARBERSHOP STYLE RICHARD GARDAM
Members will be introduced to the notion of a capella, four part harmony singing. All singing is from memory so reading music, although useful, is not essential. Each attendee will receive a CD learning aid for practice between sessions. Sheet music will also be provided.
Richard Gardam was a high school teacher and has been a Barbershopper since 1999 with the Wellingtonians and quartet member of Acappellago from 2000.

W111 MUSIC OF OUR MISSPENT YOUTH ROD DOWNIE
Relax to the popular music that you flirted to, danced to and romanced to. Not all made the Hit Parade but many are good dance tempos so dance if you wish, sing along or just enjoy listening.

W112 CHILDREN'S FAVOURITES REVISITED JOAN CARR
What was your favourite book when you were a child? Or what are your grandchildren's favourites? This is a participatory course - members will be invited to bring and talk about their favourite children's books, authors or poets.
Joan trained as a teacher of the deaf and has taught disabled children and adults in Australia, Canada and Nigeria. She is a confirmed bookworm.

W113 MAKING THE MOST OF THE THIRD AGE ROWENA MACKEAN
Different speakers will discuss what we can do to remain active and independent and what's available to help us, in housing, driving, health and wellbeing and useful information.

W114 SPANISH FRED SCHLUTER
This is a continuing course so new students should have a basic knowledge of the language.
Although not a professional teacher, Fred has had many years of experience as an interpreter. Teaching helps him to maintain his own knowledge of languages.

W115 WHAT'S IN A CAVE? ALBERT GOEDE
History of explanation of caves and exploration techniques. Why do caves fascinate both sportsmen and scientists? We look at caves as an animal habitat and a source of information about the past.
Albert is a retired university lecturer from the School of Geography and Environmental Studies. Hobbies are bushwalking, photography and gardening.

Some more Euclidean geometry, a brush up on algebraic equations then a start on coordinate geometry.
Noela has a background in teaching maths and science in Hobart high schools. She has a passion for maths and for making it understandable and enjoyable for all.

W122 MUSICALS: ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER DAVID TURNER
We focus on the life and work of arguably the world's greatest living composer in musical theatre today. An expansion of the 8-session Monday course in Term 1 2005 with plenty of audio and visual treats along the way.
David was involved in musical theatre in NSW before retiring to Tasmania in 1991. He has been active in choral groups including the TSO chorus and is presently a member of `Sing Australia'.

W123 THE ROMANY MARGARET ROSE
Not a nation but a group of tribes who prefer their own lifestyle. Persecuted over thousands of years, they have survived. We will try to discover how this came about and learn of their language, identity, culture and lifestyle.
Old teachers never die - they tutor at U3A - Margaret is a retired teacher/school principal. Tasmanian born and bred - and still here by choice!

W124 ADVANCED GERMAN AND CONVERSATION FRED SCHLUTER
This is a continuing course. New students should be reasonably fluent in the language.

W125 LIGHTHOUSES NOELA FOXCROFT
The first part of the course will trace the history of lighthouses from the early primitive beacons to the fully automated lights of the present day. Following this will be a look at Tasmanian lighthouses.
Noela has a background in teaching maths and science in Hobart high schools. Her interests are in sailing, art, music and theatre - but most of all in U3A!

This is an opportunity for new players to learn chess and for those who haven't played for a while to refresh and improve their game.

WEDNESDAY SESSION 3 - 12.05

W131 CIRCLE DANCING KRISTA SANDS
Dancing mainly in a circle without partners or sets, circle dancing goes back to its mostly Balkan roots centuries ago, with a lot of modern chorographies thrown in. It's good for you, even if it is fun!
Krista has been dancing in some form or other as long as she can remember and a few years ago she did a Recreational Folkdance teachers' course - but mostly she just loves dancing.

W132 THE WORLD IN CRISIS PETER STEVENSON
There are many critical conditions today - population, global warming, energy, disease, poverty, biodiversity, natural hazards and unrest. We shall describe some or all of these and consider our chances of survival. Levy $3.
Peter is a geologist and a specialist in general earth science who has worked in the UK, Africa, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, the Gulf (hence Islam watcher) and Australia.

Join a small group to read a variety of plays from the U3A library. Men are especially welcome.

W134 FACING THE MUSIC CHRIS CARSON
An introduction to classical music with some knowledge and appreciation by listening to recordings and non-technical discussion. Covers major composers, history, trends - from medieval to 20th century.
Christian was a radio broadcaster for 12 years and has sung roles in opera, oratorio and on ABC radio.
