M111 FRENCH HILARY FAWCETT
Understanding and using French at higher intermediate level. Classes planned to suit students. This is a continuing class and current students will be given priority to continue.

Hilary has degrees in Medieval History and in French - she worked in music administration and teaching.

M112 MATHS GAMES WITH YOUR GRANDCHILDREN PAT JEFFERY
A selection of games to develop mathematical skills and ways of thinking for children from kindergarten to Year 8.

Pat had many years in education as primary teacher, maths consultant and lecturer in maths education.

M113 TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD JOAN CARR
This novel by Harper Lee won the Pulitzer Prize for its skill in dealing with universal themes of tolerance, courage, compassion, and justice - bound to inspire some controversial discussion and we'll watch the movie together at the end of the course.

Joan Carr: Originally trained as a teacher of the deaf and has taught disabled children and adults in Australia, Canada and Nigeria.

A glimpse at some botanists and plant hunters and gatherers.

Margaret enjoys gardening and growing native plants - this has led her to find out about some of those who found and described the plants.

Different speakers will look at this topic under the headings of Who are they? - Diaspora - Food - History etc.

M116 EXPLORING THE WORLD ON FOOT JOAN PETTMAN
Mind-blowing experiences - not just a slide show! Visit exotic places like Everest Base Camp, the Inca Trail, Antarctica, North Pakistan ... guest speakers will share their adventures of walking at sea level up 20,000 feet in temperatures from -20 to +30 on trips of a day or several weeks.

M121 TALES OF EIGHT CITIES FRANCES PARSONS
The history and development of eight cities which have something of particular interest associated with them, eg Damascus and the Haj, Mexico City and the conquest of the Aztecs, Jerusalem, Shanghai, Venice, Valetto, Urbino.

Frances was a teacher and educational administrator and has spent much time in retirement traveling, narrating for Hear-a-book, lecturing for U3A and pursuing crafts.

A look at the wonderful, wacky Williams who ruled England.

Ruth has taught British, Ancient, Australian and C20th history and is chief examiner for C20th history and moderation advisor for Ancient Civilisations.

Eight guest speakers from very varied backgrounds will talk about interesting aspects of their lives.

After teaching in Tasmania, England and Baffin Island Gordon joined Adult Education and was Principal Adult Education officer (State) for 16 years before retiring in 1990. His interests are travel, tennis, reading, bowls and light bush walking.

M125 DEMOCRACY, THE POLITICAL & ELECTORAL PROCESS AND THE PEOPLE COLIN BALL
Is our democracy the best we can achieve or is it all an illusion? Is people power in our electoral system and the political process a reality or a myth? Why is the electorate so apathetic and alienated yet fails to react? Can we learn from other countries? Are there reasons for change? Colin has been involved in the conduct & management of elections for some 38 years, in Australia and overseas.

M126 COUNTRY DANCING ALISON JONES
Exercise with friends - move to lively music - share some teamwork and gain a feeling of achievement when the patterns work!

Alison has been dancing literally for as long as she can remember. On the way she has collected teaching qualifications and taken part in displays and now keeps in touch with teachers all over Australia.

This is a continuing intermediate class. We will be using the Cambridge Latin Course Book 3.

Tasmanian born and bred, Margaret taught maths first and then computing at TAFE.

M133 PLAY READING BERNARD GILLON
Join a small group to read a variety of plays from the U3A library. Men are especially welcome.

A retired primary school principal, Bernard's main interests are gardening, travel and choral singing. He sings with the Hobart Orpheus Choir and Riverside Arts Club, is on the committee of both and is a Life Member of Orpheus Choir.

M134 ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER DAVID TURNER
Having covered 20th century musical theatre in general followed by `Smash Hits' we now focus on the life and works of the greatest contemporary composer and entrepreneur. Plenty of audio and visual treats along the way.

David appeared in many musicals in NSW before retiring to Tasmania in 1991 and since then he has been active in choral groups, TSO chorus, The Song Company etc. He is currently learning to play the piano.

This is a continuing course so new students should have some knowledge of the language.

Although not a professional teacher, Fred has had many years of experience as an interpreter. Teaching helps him to maintain his own knowledge of languages.

W112 JAPANESE CULTURE AND LANGUAGE KIM SCHOEN
Introduction to basic Japanese conversation - survival phrases for travel etc - introduction to aspects of Japanese culture.

After graduating from UTAS with BA in modern languages Japanese and German, Kim lived and worked for 4 years in Japan. Currently she is working for Centrelink International Services.

W113 BRUSH UP YOUR MATHS NOELA FOXCROFT
A refresher course on High School Maths comes with a guarantee of success and a lot of fun in the process - bring an exercise book, ruler and calculator. A continuing course but new members are welcome.

Noela taught Maths and Science in High Schools for 30 years and now enjoys teaching at U3A. Other passions are literature, art and music.

Continuation of the theme - landforms created by running water and ice - limestone caves, granite and sandstone landscapes.

Albert is a retired lecturer from the School of Geography and Environmental Studies. His hobbies are bushwalking, photography and gardening.

A course with some repeat lectures and several new topics. Hear what a variety of speakers have to say about their specialty, ranging from the classroom to the concert hall.

Philippa has taught music both in Australia and overseas. She is a Marking Examiner for the Tasmanian Secondary Assessment Board and as a pianist she enjoys ensemble playing and accompanying.

How to research your Australian and English family history. How and where to start, where to find the information, how to access the records. It's easier than you think!

Brenda is a retired infant teacher and has been researching her family history for 15 years. A member of the Tasmanian Family History Society, she has been helping visitors and members at their library for 10 years.

This is an opportunity for new players to learn chess and for those who haven't played for a while to refresh their game.

Don first became interested in chess as a result of contracting polio and later played for a number of clubs including YMCA, Eastern Shore and Sandy Bay.

Geological and atmospheric dangers, hazards and fears.

Peter has worked as a geologist in Africa, the Middle East, UK and Tasmania. He is an 'Islamist' and is interested in musical instrument making.

Tai Chi is a universal medium for the cultivation of body, mind and spirit. It is for everyone, of all ages.

W125 ENGLISH GRAMMAR AND USAGE - A QUIRKY MISCELLANY GLENN PULLEN
Pleasing, irritating, puzzling and orthodox aspects of our English language heritage.

Before retiring, Glenn was a supervisor of school and college libraries. Now he is a lawn bowler, UCA lay preacher, incessant reader and consulter of language books.

Alan Bennett's play `The History Boys' was the critical and popular success of London's 2004 theatre season. Funny and perceptive, the play is an investigation of teaching, the subject of history and of course adolescence. Note: Play contains adult themes and occasional coarse language. Those who wish to join this group will need a copy of the play, which Fullers has agreed to import for $25.00.

Hugo has taught in schools, colleges and university. His interests are literature, history, philosophy and political science.

Mostly European folk dances but also modern choreographies, no partner or experience necessary.

Krista is an ex-zoologist turned computer programmer and she is addicted to folk-dancing.

W134 FACING THE MUSIC CHRISTIAN CARSON
An introduction to classical music with some knowledge and appreciation by listening to recordings and non-technical discussion. Covers major composers, history, trends - from medieval to 20th century.

Christian was a radio broadcaster for 12 years and has sung roles in opera, oratorio and on ABC radio.

W135 DISCOVERING DEMOCRACY AND CITIZENSHIP PHILIP CROUCH
Participatory democracy and active citizenship in the 21st century require acknowledgement of an interdependency of responsibility within a local and global context.

Philip is a passionate human rights & social justice advocate with a background in social sciences, men's health, peace issues and community development. A member of Riverside Arts Club and Amnesty International, he has interests in Tai Chi, gardening and lifelong learning.
