M311 FRENCH HILARY FAWCETT
Understanding and using French at higher intermediate level. Classes planned to suit students. This is a continuing class and current students will be given priority to continue.

Hilary has degrees in Medieval History and in French. Worked in music administration, stumbled into teaching via U3A and consider it a great privilege.

M312 LIVING AND WORKING IN OTHER CULTURES JOAN PETTMAN
This is a repeat of the Term 1 course. Hear the experiences of speakers who have lived and worked in other countries/cultures such as Pakistan, Tanzania, Chile, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Tonga, Marshall Islands and New Guinea.

M313 THE GRAPES OF WRATH JOAN CARR
Let's study an American novel for a change! In this powerful chronicle of the Great Depression. John Steinbeck not only described the plight of migrant workers but also commented on the economic and social system that gave rise to it.

Joan Carr: Originally trained as a teacher of the deaf, Joan has taught disabled children and adults in Australia, Canada and Nigeria. She has 6 children and a passion for books.

How to research your Australian and English family history. How and where to start, where to find the information, how to access the records. It's easier than you think!

Brenda is a retired infant teacher. She has been researching her family history for 15 years. A member of the Tasmanian Family History Society, she has been helping visitors and members at their library for more than 10 years.

Samuel Johnson and his great friend Joshua Reynolds formed The Club whose members were the leaders in science, art, music, theatre etc in 18th century London. We meet some of these distinguished members.

M316 COMPUTERS FOR BEGINNERS
We will look at word processing and learn to organise files. There will be no Internet instruction in this class. To be held at Warrane Primary School.

M321 COUNTRY DANCING ALISON JONES
Social dancing for gentle exercise and enjoyment.

Alison has been Scottish country dancing as long as she can remember (including displays and gaining a teacher's certificate) and through it has friends all over Australia and in many other countries.

How maps are made, how they looked from early times and modern maps of strange things.

M323 THE INFAMOUS STORY OF THE WRECK OF THE 'BATAVIA' BARRY REYNOLDS
In 1629 the Dutch ship 'Batavia' was wrecked on Houtman Abrolhos. By the time rescue arrived fifteen weeks later, over 100 survivors had been murdered at the behest of a charismatic, psychopathic heretic. This course tells their story.

The history and science of lapis lazuli and pearls, jade and coral, malachite and jet etc. Jewel has been a gemologist for 25 years and is a life member and tutor of the Gemmological Association of Australia.

We will examine the technology fuelling the "Information Revolution". Digital consumer electronics will be demystified.You will understand how a computer can calculate and make decisions.Although the course is technical in nature, no previous experience is required.

Ian Duffy is an electronics engineer with 35 years experience in digital R&D, and a background in tertiary and industry education.

This is a continuing class. We will be using the Cambridge Latin Course Book 3.

Margaret Collis: Tasmanian born and bred, Margaret taught maths first and then computing at TAFE.

M333 PLAY READING BERNARD GILLON
A range of 20th Century plays will be read - farces, comedies, melodramas and thrillers. More men are invited to enrol.

A retired primary school principal, Bernard's main interests are gardening, travel and choral singing. He sings with the Hobart Orpheus Choir and Riverside Arts Club, is on the committee of both and is a Life Member of Orpheus Choir.

M335 WATER IN TASMANIA PART 2 DAVID LEAMAN
This part of the course covers issues of water quality, management, equity and law. We will consider matters of public health and possible solutions.

A suggested text is available from the tutor for about $10.

M336 IRISH TRACES ON TASMANIAN HISTORY RICHARD DAVIS
The course examines the contribution of Irish immigrants, and later their descendants, to Tasmanian society from 1803 to the present day.Emphasis will be placed on Irish involvement in the convict system, the development of self-government, educational issues (State Aid and the growth of the University), the evolution of the Labor and other parties, and local arts.

This is a continuing course so new students should have prior knowledge of the language.

Although not a professional teacher, Fred has had many years of experience as an interpreter. Teaching helps him to maintain his own knowledge of languages.

This course is designed around 5 speakers with the intervening weeks for discussion of preceding lecture. Lectures will be on maths/science, medicine, literature and religion.

Helen has a fellowship in physiotherapy and was in private practice for 25 years. She has a BA in Anthropology from UNE.

Ten speakers will talk about culture and artifacts from around the world.

Lionel came to Australia in 1949 to work for HEC at Bronte Park. He has lived in Howrah since 1958 and enjoys traveling and meeting people. He has given courses on Collectables previously.

This is an opportunity for new players to learn chess and for those who haven't played for a while to refresh their game.

Don first became interested in chess as a result of contracting polio and later played for a number of clubs including YMCA, Eastern Shore and Sandy Bay.

The novel was a very popular 18th Century invention. We shall read and discuss extracts from a number of best-sellers - romance, adventure, travel, mystery, horror and a 'shaggy dog story' - and the delightful short novel by Goldsmith 'The Vicar of Wakefield' (readily available).

Metals are an essential part of our lives. What are they? Where do they come from? How are they produced? Science, technology and history all in one package.

Speakers will include Frank Brown (chemist), Peter Stevenson (geologist), Merv Kershaw (metallurgist), Peter Read (physicist) and Bob Callaghan (mining engineer).

Backgammon is an ancient game yet still played world-wide. It is easy to play, and is a quick game (15-20 mins). Though it is skillful, all levels of skill can enjoy it, and as luck also effects the play a strong player does not always beat a lesser player. Boards provided, though you are welcome to bring your own.

An introduction to classical music with some knowledge and appreciation by listening to recordings and non-technical discussion. Covers major composers, history, trends - from medieval to 20th century.

This course will ask What is the Nobel Prize? Then we will have a look at some of the winners in Science.

O302 WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOP: KEITH WILLIAMS
How to apply all water mediums, gouache, acrylic, casein, also fundamentals of speed painting in oils. We need 10 enrolments for this class to go ahead.

Keith passed scholarship to Harrow Technical Art College then worked as a commercial artist for a London newspaper until called up for the RAF. After the war he returned to the UK and taught art fundamentals.
