M111 FRENCH (INTERMEDIATE) HILARY FAWCETT
Last year's class split into two groups to allow greater participation. There are some vacancies for those who had a fair grounding in French in the past and wish to retrieve and extend their knowledge. A balance of written and oral French with grammar as required – it's fun.

A short history of English ceramics from the eighteenth century to the present day: pottery and porcelain made by factories such as Adams and Pratt, Wedgwood, Whieldon, Chelsea, Bow, Derby, Worcester, Royal Crown Derby, Royal Worcester and Royal Doulton.

Build your knowledge of financial planning. We'll discuss industry terminology, how to handle your money, saving and investing, being credit and debt smart, what's hot and what's not in the investment world, the property market, maximising your Centrelink entitlements, tips and traps when making a will and lots more.

M114 COSMOLOGY: AN AMATEUR PERSPECTIVE VIN COCKBURN
Cosmology, the study of the universe as a whole, was once the province of philosophers and theologians. Today it has become a science, in which theories can be tested against the evidence of observations (although conjecture still plays a part). The course covers the period 40,000 BCE to the present. How old is the universe? Where did it come from? Are we really made of stardust?

M121 CONTEMPORARY FRENCH NOVEL JILL ASPLAND
Read in French passages from two well known novels, "L'amant" by Marguerite Duras and "La Femme Rompue" by Simone de Beauvoir, with an introductory talk on each author.

A quite delectable array of travel talks has been arranged. After accompanying Frank Brown on The Road Less Travelled, we will visit Shark Bay before travelling to such places as Patagonia, Bulgaria, Finland, Sicily and the U.S. (National Parks).

A range of 20'h Century plays will be read – farces, comedies, melodramas and thrillers. Most plays mirror society and females and males comprise the casts. More men are invited to enrol. Give it a go even if you haven't done so before.

A description of aspects of 18th Century science and technology presented by a group of tutors. This was one of the most significant periods in world history. Why?

Not a history, but a language class – with a difference. We YAII not learn Anglo-Saxon as we might French or a modern language, but we will get an idea of how it works, as far as possible by the (assisted) guesswork of class members. Meet the (pre-Chaucerian) language that became modem Australian!

W113 POETS IN A LANDSCAPE ROWENA MACKEAN
English poets of the Eighteenth Century have been overshadowed by the Romantic era that followed. Yet there were many fine poets, widely read in their day, who influenced later writers. We shall read poems by Thomson, Gray, Collins, Crabbe, Cowper, others, especially portrayals of the English countryside.

Since sanity is defined as "having or showing reason, sound judgement or good sense" it appears that much human activity is mad, while seen as normal (eg. speed). This idea is to be illustrated by invited speakers from a variety of walks of life.

A series of talks on Antarctic related science and logistics. This will be a series of talks – not a single unit. Speakers will give a good understanding of Australia's research in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.

Hear of the experiences and challenges that a number of people have had living and working in a variety of other cultures - such places as Pakistan, Tonga, Tanzania, Chile, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Marshall Islands and New Guinea.

A look at the development of mathematics from earliest time to the present day. Term 1 will deal with the early civilisations of Egypt, Babylonia, India and China. You don't have to know any maths to enjoy this course!

2004 is the 'Year of the Built Environment'. The city is the most complex and comprehensive cultural artefact created by humankind. Based upon the presenter's own records, explore cities from the Bronze Age to New York. There will be an opportunity for the group to choose from an extensive list of examples.
