Benefits of a Good School: Social aggregation in the marine environment.
Animals as diverse as krill and whales can live more or less permanently in groups of various sizes. This presents a problem for ecological theory as individuals are basically selfish in their short-term behavior, but must sacrifice some individuality for the good of the swarm, school or pod. This talk will highlight the diversity of aggregations in the ocean and some of the methods scientists use to study them.
